Autumn is here, home got chilly – what to do?

The indoor temperature of your apartment greatly affects both comfort of living and energy consumption. At Koas, we focus on both and aim to find a balance between maintaining a comfortable temperature and saving energy.

You can find more information about heating in our Tenant Guide and on websites like Motiva (in Finnish). Here, we’ll explain how heating works at Koas. Everyone is different and used to different temperatures at home. Sometimes, especially in autumn and winter in Finlans, you simply need to wear more clothes even at home, while at other times, it might feel too warm.

What is the right temperature at home?

The recommended indoor temperature is around 20–22 °C. This range is found to be suitable for both comfort and energy efficiency. However, temperatures may vary slightly between rooms, and personal preferences can differ.

When the heating in your Koas home is properly adjusted, the heating system allows just the right amount of warm water to maintain the optimal temperature of +21 °C. If outdoor temperatures are still above zero, the radiator’s surface temperature remains low due to automatic controls.

You can easily check the indoor temperature with a regular room thermometer. Remember to place it in the middle of the room, not directly near heat sources or windows, to get an accurate reading. You can pick up a free room thermometer from the Koas office!

What to do if your home feels chilly?

If you feel like the temperature in your apartment is off, here are a few things to check and try before contacting Koas maintenance:

  • Measure the temperature: Use an inroom thermometer to see if the temperature stays around +21 °C.
  • Adjust the radiators: Turn the radiator thermostats to the maximum setting to ensure sufficient heating.
  • Wear warm clothing: The indoor temperature varies by season. During winter in Finland, it’s normal to wear more layers indoors. Put on long-sleeved clothes, pants, and cozy wool socks!
  • Listen for funny sounds: If your radiator is gurgling or bubbling, it may need to be “bled” – submit a fault report/request.
  • Ensure clear airflow: Make sure that curtains or furniture are not blocking the radiator from heating the room properly.
  • Avoid other heat sources: Other heat sources, like using the oven, can interfere with the radiator’s function.
  • Submit a fault report: If the temperature consistently stays below +21 °C, submit a maintenance request! We’ll work together to find a solution.

When to contact maintenance?

If you have tried all the tips above and your apartment is still noticeably too cold (below 20 °C) or too hot (above 24 °C), don’t hesitate to reach out to Koas maintenance. The maintenance team is happy to help identify and resolve the issue.
